The School of Engineering and Sciences is a small, innovative high school located at 7345 Gloria Drive behind the new Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Public Library. Approximately 385 students currently attend SES in grades 7th through 12th. SES is an open enrollment, public school and is part of the Sacramento City Unified School District. We have students coming from as far away as Folsom, Antelope, Elk Grove, and Clarksburg.
The School of Engineering and Sciences opened its doors at the Bear Flag Elementary School campus in September 2007. In January 2010, it moved to its current location.
SES's middle school is competitive with other middle schools in basketball and soccer. High school students participate in sports at their neighborhood high school. Some of our high school students are currently playing basketball, football, track and field, and soccer at John F. Kennedy High School, C.K. McClatchy High School, and Luther Burbank High School.
SES also has competitive FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) teams at the middle school level and the high school level. Our FIRST Lego League team (middle school) will be moving on in competition after placing first in one of the categories at a competition at Sam Brannan Middle School. Our FIRST Robotics team (high school) meets after school twice a week and starts its intensive design, build, and competition season on January 7th.
SES students also participate in the Junior A.C.E. (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program and the A.C.E. Mentor program.
In November 2011, SMUD and Sacramento City Unified School District unveiled the Solar Sunflower (first of its kind nationwide) which sits in the quad at SES. The Solar Sunflower is a hands-on, interactive learning laboratory. Students are able to move the panels and learn how to gather the sun's energy for electricity or to charge electronic devices and equipment. SMUD will partner with other municipalities nationwide to place these educational tools in schools all over the United States. SES will help SMUD evaluate the design and set the standard for the Solar Sunflowers that follow.
