What about turning the unfinished mall into a casino, agriculture college or solar energy field? What are your thoughts for the property? Is there any news on the future of the mall project? I wish the city council would focus more attention on this project going in some direction this year!

I still want Outlets. It's the right size, and that kind of thing will sell out here. But they need to be the right outlets. Kinda like Folsom, some higher end and some budget.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let it be a shopping mall (outlet or retail) and let it be soon! Sick of being the step-child of Sacramento when I need to shop. I absolutely believe a nice shopping center could be supported and would do well here. Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, Ann Taylor, a book store, a great deli... Elk Grove deserves it! Seems like we're just waiting for an anchor store to be daring enough to sign on first. Then, you would think, the rest will follow. But we've been waiting for years.

I like the idea of a Scandia, Raging Waters or some other family entertainment center. I am not a fan of malls but anything would be better then the eyesore.
I heard the city is looking to do an aquatics center/ civic center project off Elk Grove Blvd. The traffic on Elk Grove Blvd is a nightmare in the evening. It can take 40 minutes to get from Laguna West to Waterman. I think that would be a diaster without doing some major road work to move the traffic along better on EG Blvd.
Maybe the city should finish the mall or whatever it will be before working on the civic center aquatics center.

The city does not own the mall property. The Howard Hughes Corporation does. It's up to the developer to get the retailers. All the city can do is to keep hounding them to do so and not forget about it. I too would LOVE to see that mall completed. Elk Grove desperately needs it.

I don't think we the see mall finished until housing fills in and the I-5/US50 connector gets started in earnest.
A casino would be hilarious.

If Elk Grove can't keep businesses open in strip malls all over town, how can it possibly support a big mall? Unless its a WalMart, it won't survive.

It looks like an apocalyptic movie set, or a paintball park. Maybe a gun range! Only kidding on that last one. Too close to the freeway.

OH.... Carol McE "and" sabant... ditto on your comments. Heavens how many times at EG Online has this topic cropped up ... and the property there simply remains the same? and... the years keep rolling by.... When I think of Elk Grove - first thing that comes to mind is the never ending nail salons.

Well, the forever proposed connector from I-5 at Hood-Franklin, to Kammerer, to Grantline, to wherever it ends at 50 in the Folsom area. I can't say for sure that the project is a must for the mall , but it is needed infrustructure for EG. I assume its also why the city claimed sphere of influence over the southern portion of the proposed highway....lots of potential commercial possibilities once this thing gets done.

People thinking stores like Macy's, Williams Sonoma, Crate and Barrell, Ann Taylor would do well in Elk Grove are living in a dream world. The demographics in EG do not support such retailers. The only things that seem to do well in EG are acheap discount stores, fast food and strip malls. Look, the Paladio Mall in Folsom has taking years to finally pick up steam and thats taking into accont much higher end income earners living in near by places like El Dorado Hills, Fair Oaks and Granite Bay.

I wish the mall would be like the Palladio Mall in Folsom. The stores there are not that high end, H&M, Sports Authority, etc. I also liked the atmosphere of the outdoor mall.

The stupid city councel. EG mall will suck just like downtown mall. When its hot, no AC, going from store to store. When its raining, getting wet from store to store. I cant wait!

With downtown plaza losing all these stores and the future of downtown plaza seems to be questionable I think a Macy's would do Great in Elk grove.

RJP95624 no longer lives in the area and continues to bash EG-. While entitled to opinions if you no longer like or live here why continue to participate in this forum? I think the city council really would like the mall developed but have not much control since the mall owners went bankrupt, and current owners are not doing anything about building it. I think it is an embarrassment. I think we might be able to support Macy's JCP, Crate and Barrell,Williams Sonoma. I like outlets too.

I don't think everyone in Elk Grove is broke and can't afford to shop anywhere but Dollar Tree. Is that the assessment being made by some people? Certainly part of our demographic can't afford to shop at the mid-range stores but to make sweeping generalizations is rude and inaccurate. I still think an outdoor shopping mall (outlet or retail) with fountains and restaurants would be wonderful. And it would bring Elk Grove some much needed tax dollars! And I wouldn't be the only one there!

Maybe the Mayor of Elk Grove , Gary Davis, can start getting the community and television stations involved to put some fire under The Howard Hughes Corporation that owns the property.
It seems that Mayor Kevin Johnson rallies alot of support for his efforts to save the Sacramento Kings by doing this. Keeping it on the news and in the minds of everyone.
Ikea could be an anchor store for the site, as well as, the other stores mentioned in above posts.
Maybe even turning it into some type of sports area. Different buildings for indoor skateboard/Scooter park (Epic in Rocklin), arcades game place (Dave and Busters, Incredible John' Pizza), sports gear stores, batting cages, trampoline family center (SkyZone), Bike shops, Golf shops, and any thing sports/recreational related..

I do wish some stores like JCP would start up at the unfinished EG Mall. Perhaps a fishing/hunting/bait shop which seems to be lacking in EG. The Mall as it is is an eyesore. I wonder how much damage is caused to the open buildings by adverse weather?

What's really interesting .... is that we don't seem to get any "progress reports" from our city folks -I mean all this time and the only persons that seem to bring it up - are the EG residents. My oh my .... My mind just went to all the debate awhile ago on where to place the "welcome to EG" signage. Just think of all the chatter that must go on with the endless cars passing on the freeway by the ugly metal framework there. Not very welcoming is it?

Howard Hughes is into making money; if Howard Hughes Corporation believed the mall would make money it would of begun sometime ago....it's about the money. If Hughes Corp believed moderate to upscale shops would work..it would be here. Remember at the top of the market when this project began Target was a suggested anchor....

Lynn nailed it.
The only way the city can "force" HHC to build the mall would be to give them $$$. Not sure this is the best use of funds.

Maybe the residents of Elk Grove can puts some pressure on the Howard Hughes Corp. to get a status update? According to their website it is a Strategic Development
Here is the link to their website fact sheet.
