Anybody else see the pharmacy students with the big protest sign and the mannequin of death (in hood with scepter) at the corner of Harbour Point Drive and Elk Grove Blvd? They've been there all this week--I googled the school and it's located in Rancho Cordova. So don't understand why they picked that location to picket. School's name is California Northstate University College of Pharmacy.

The school is planning to open a new location in Elk Grove at 8700 West Taron Drive, with both a pharmacy college and for-profit medical school. Elk Grove Patch is trying to find out more about who put on the protest. Did you talk to the protesters, Casablanca?

LC posted on Elk Grove Laguna Forums that it is the Carpenter's union, but I don't understand what the connection is.

Doesnt the union tend to picket any job or business that does not unionize? I see it all the time outside of CVS etc.

Didn't speak to anybody. Their large sign definitely leaves the impression that they are disgruntled students. Plus there was two of them dressed in scrubs. The sign's professionally made, and the Grim Reaper mannequin is huge.

Yes, it seems to be the union (and I guess you can take what you want if they are trying to portray themselves as students).

My first thought was union, but I don't know what the purpose is for them to protest right now.  I would bet most people don't even know that the school is going into the old AAA building, so they'll have no clue what that is about.  I knew the school was going in, and I still have no clue what the protest is about.  Where they're located for their protest, you would think they were protesting something in that corner shopping center.

If it's the Carpenter's union, are they protesting the remodeling on the building?  Don't see what they would have to do with the actual school.

I got a message from the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council yesterday, and they are indeed the ones behind the protest. We'll have a story on Elk Grove Patch soon, and I'll repost it here.

Highly deceptive approach by the union.

    The union lost my support!

Why anyone would protest any business that wants to open in Elk Grove is beyond me. We need business people. I'm just happy that the building will be occupied. Now only 242,873 more buildings to fill.

Can you clarify how you think your life would be better if unions were eliminated? Is the quality of life so much better for people in right to work states? Do you think prices would go down, more houses would be built or public services woould be provided cheaper?

Their attorney should consider a libel suit against the union.

I work for right to work employer, get paid fairly. I do not care for union thug mentality. Yes houses would be built cheaper, food prices would go down.

How does a Pharmacy School (according to the Carpenter Union sign) -

    Hurt Workers

    Hurt Families

    Hurt Community

The union's sign is very misleading. The school should contact them because it is ruining their reputation.

Elk Grove is very fortunate to get a professional pharmacy and medical school,

Up to this point what have we seen in new businesses moving into Elk Grove? Nail salons, cigarette stores, check cashing places.

This school will bring in 400 to 800 professional school student which will bail out the very weak retail market. The residents of the west side should welcome this school. I know the residential landlords will like the quality of student that goes to a pharmacy / medical school.

I agree.  Look at all those empty office buildings and shopping centers.

Apple cut back on some of their shifts.  The city should be working with them to make sure that they will stay in town.  I know two people that got their hours cut.  They won't say exactly what is going on over there.

I might call the school and tell them to go non-union, non-prevailing wage to spite those guys who put up the sign and inflatable man of death.

Since labor only tpically accounts for about 20-25% of construction costs, a swing of 10-20% in costs would only affect prices about 2-4%. Hardly enough to account for the massive drop in housing prices.

Inerstingly enough, financing costs for builders used to be about 14-18% back in the day, currently they are about 2-3%. As costs went down, housing prices went up - clear example that large swings in costs are not the primary driver.

land prices went up, labor went up. Many union businesses such as grocery stores are losing money due to union, like the Raley/BelAir's that have recently closed, the unions essentially cost people their jobs and shoppers.
