"The Moppet Shoppe" Horrible Customer Service

Let me start by saying this store (The Moppet Shoppe) does have very cute clothes. But my visit today (1/21/12) was so upsetting that it will be my last. I walked into the store as the only customer Saturday afternoon and an older woman stepped out from the back. She did not greet me or say a word to me, but did manage to follow me around the store like a hawk (as if I were going to steal). I was clearly carrying my baby's baptismal hat to try and match items for her dress, but she asked nothing of what I needed. It was a really uncomfortable, upsetting experience that I would not wish on anyone. They have lost my business for good, and I will no longer recommend them.

Is this a joke? She followed you around? That's it? In these tough economic times I think it is irresponsible to come online and bash a small business like this over something so minor...

I have been a customer at the Moppet Shoppe for 7 years and have only received the best service EVERYTIME! It doesn't matter if I shop on the weekend, weekdays, or right before closing...I always have received great service. I don't understand why people are so quick to bash a business. Are you that quick to compliment a business? For those of you that have shopped the Moppet Shoppe, you know this is an untrue review and for those of you that haven't shopped there...you should!

I used to shop there a lot and would go on the weekends when the owner was not working. She is very pushy and annoying. Last time I went in on a weekend she was working so I won't shop there anymore. Their return policy is awful also. If you have receipt and get home and doesn't fit child it is in store credit. Some things are cute but customer service is not good and very pushy.

This was my experience at The Moppet Shoppe and it was not a good one. I stand by what I have written, and if someone else had a similar experience (and elkgrove0406 obviously had) I myself would appreciate their review. I do not agree with ErinO that in "tough economic times" it is OK to follow a customer around the store without speaking to them. To say that my experience is "a joke" or "untrue" as nataliesmom has said makes me think that they must know the owner or have some sort of vested interest in the store. It's sad that I will not be able t go back to that store because of the customer service, but it is even more disappointing that other members on this site cannot take a differing opinion without resorting to belittling it or portraying it as fictional.

I'm with elkgrove406 in that I avoid the store when the owner is there and for the same reasons. I was struck by nataliesmom's comment that the first post was "untrue" as she was not there and couldn't possbly no that for a fact. I've been the only one in the store at times and not been greeted either. While I take no exception to an employee following me around the store, it's just plain rude if they don't greet you or offer help while doing it.

P.S. Also not thrilled with their return policy and no longer shop there.

I never stated that what happened was untrue, but I do think that people are quick to bash a business, but not quick to pass out positives. I do not have a vested interest in the store, I am only a customer. Don't be so quick to lash out!

I've never stepped foot in the store, my comment was based purely on what was described in the first post.
Perhaps the store employee thought she was providing good service by following the customer around.
We don't know who this employee is, and to bash the entire business on the basis of one employee's actions in a single isolated incident seems like a rush to judgement.
If you were that bothered by this event, why not call the owner/manager and voice your displeasure first before publically bashing the business?

I was in there once when a few people came in together and the employee (an older lady as well)was keeping her eye on them. She mentioned they were having an issue with shoplifting. Do you blame them for watching people?
I have never once had a bad experience with them and I have been there MANY times over 10 years. I am sorry your experience was not pleasant, but if I were you, I'd go back and speak with the owner. She has always been so friendly and helpful to me!

It is too bad that a resident of Elk Grove had a bad experience with a local shop, but, I too have experienced bad customer service, food, etc with local businesses. Because it is local doesn't mean that we cant make negative comments about the business if they are warranted. I try to shop Elk Grove as much as possible. When ever I have had a bad experience, I notify the owner/manager by letter explaining my views. I have written three letters in the past five years. To this date, not one has been address by the owner/manager. Needless to say, I don't shop there again. Conversely, if the service or product is excellent, I also notify the owner/manager. Again, to this date, I have not received replies either. Maybe they are too busy to cultivate new customers. Notify the owner/manager of The Moppet Shoppe before you make your final decision on whether to return.

Per the Elk Grove Online terms of service:
"You will not use the site as a forum to post complaints about businesses regardless if these businesses sponsor/advertise on ElkGroveOnline.com."
Regardless of whether you understand why this isn't a good idea to do, it is clearly a violation of the TOS.

Please take no offense, anyone. Life IS hard. Sometimes when I'm in a store and things are not right, I think, "Okay, let's lighten things up here." It can be a smile or a compliment. Store employees are supposed to do this. But if not, you never know what hard circumstance they may be going through. Your insight and kind nature could help them out, even just for a moment.

I dont get it why people feel the need to bash a business when they only gave them 1 try. I am a strong beiever in giving everyone even a business 3 tries..the 3 time if they strike out and I did all I could and still noting is done..I am gone. If you had one bad experience no need to talk negative about a business. There are a few places in EG that I will not shop as they have given me and my family bad business 3 times ..then maybe then I will talk about how they lack customer service etc. When my kids were little I shopped at the Moppet shoppe a lot and still would if they were still little. I understand why she only gives store credit. Unless you are in her shoes don't judge her or her store policy. I have heard the horror stories about how customers treated her garmet and asked for a full refund when they themselves ruined it..it was obvious they ruined it..baby food stains on garmet etc. What would you do if you were her and faced many times with people who would returned used items?? You cannot sell it as new anymore now what?

I have shopped at the store several times in the past and majority when the owner was working. In regards to the store policy I was refering to items brand new with tags still attached. I asked if I could take it home try it on my daughter and bring back if it didn't fit was told no store credit only. Also if you buy a gift for someone they open gift and don't like it, doesn't fit, already recd sale item. Can not return with receipt and tags attached only store credit will be issued. Yes it is her store she can do what she likes but she is loosing a lot of business and people I know that used to shop there will not again.

Actually, Nataliesmom, you should read your first post again. You clearly wrote, "For those of you who have shopped the Moppet Shoppe, you know this is an untrue review......" .

I hate to see a local store bashed if the customer did not attempt to resolve the issue. If you have a problem with a business get things resolved right away. Don't leave the store until you are satisfied or feel the problem can't be resolved to your satisfaction and then you can bash all you want.

I agree with you mwhite49, but what should one do when the owner IS the problem????

Good question scarlet. I don't have an answer for you, but I do agree with absolutely trying to solve the problem through the correct channels first. Then if you aren't satisfied, I would just move on and shop elsewhere. :o(

My mom shopped here when my daughter was born and bought quite a few darling outfits. She was back visiting a year or so ago and wanted to go in and see what she could find. She said the person at the counter didn't even look up when she entered and never said "Hello" or acknowledged her in anyway. She was in the store for awhile but got annoyed and left without her usual substantial purchases. Mom's a Nordstrom shopper (customer service is important) and will not return. It's a shame when a small store cannot seem to recall the keys to success.

Good heavens...enough. Thought this sounded familiar and after a little searching found that the exact same thing had been posted on another website., but no takers there. Besides, as ErinO said "the TOS have been violated."

there is having a problem with shoplifting and there is a problem with monitoring. It's a shame this business doesn't know that the best way to curb shoplifting is to interact with customers and not "hawk". Sounds like there should be some training.
