1st Running of the Elk Half Marathon

The 1st annual Running of the Elk Half Marathon is coming to Elk Grove in 2012. We have been part of the planning committee for this fun event (led by Councilmember Gary Davis), and want to spread the word to the EGO community. The race will be on April 1st, 2012 (yes, April Fools Day - but this is no joke). There will be a few races to choose from for all ability levels: a half marathon (13.1 miles); a Half Marathon relay (2 person teams - each one runs half of the half marathon), and a fun 5K (3.1 miles).

I am sad to see that it's on Sunday. So many of us don't race on Sun. (I understand how hard it is to plan something like this, but planners will never know that Sun is not optimal for many unless we voice it.)

Sounds awesome! I might come back to run it! I just ran the Santa to the Sea 1/2 marathon here in Oxnard and it was so much fun!

Aquaman- Sunday is easier for traffic control which helps keep participants safe on the roads. EGPD is part of the planning committee and they have the best interest of the participants in mind.

The race starts and ends at the Elk Grove Auto Mall. Please see the Facebook page or the website for updates. It will be fun to finally have a big race in Elk Grove. Come out and enjoy it!

I'm sticking with Shamrock'n this year. Figured since the 2 races cost the same amount adn I know that Shamrock is well supported and a lot of fun, I'd rather do that and do the Elk Grove one next year depending on how the reviews are after the first race.

I'm "running" this as well. It will be my first half marathon and I am very nerve-wracked about it... But I'm training with a GREAT group of people and I know it will be a great experience!!

I thought about doing this one... just for fun. But I've gotten pretty picky about the runs I participate in and I think I'd rather sit out the inagural running of this... until I've heard how it was with start, crowd management etc. I've participated in a few inagural runs before and... well lets just say they were learning experiences- for EVERYONE.
Hope everyone else has fun!! Can't wait to hear the reviews!

The medals that the committee has chosen are beautiful (and LARGE, too)! To see an example please go their Facebook page: Running of the Elk Half Marathon.
Also, an example of the very classy TECH shirt can be found on their page, too. This is the only run that we have seen where even the 5K runners will receive a TECH shirt!
Reminder: the price for the run will go up on March 1st.

Good Luck to all the runners in the 1st annual Running of the Elk tomorrow morning! We have more than 2,000 runners signed -up (there is still some room available on raceday - come on down).
Thanks to all the race volunteers and runners for making this a successful event.
The money raised will go to the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation which helps children play organized sports.
Also, it was a pleasure to meet so many enthusiastic runners from near and far this afternoon at the packet pickup at the Running Zone!
Lastly, if you are not running please come out and cheer on the participants. You will be glad you did!

It was a great run. Well organized, started on time, well marked. I was very impressed. It was a great to have a race so close to home!! I will definitely do this one again next year!!
